i am 99% positive about this because he pretty much outright said it

he is not the valeyard or anything else

he is what the doctor used to be. he is the doctor that destroyed and timelocked gallifrey (he said he had no choice and did it to save people). he is the doctor that made the promise to himself to become THE DOCTOR. the person that FIXES AND SAVES rather than destroys. he is the name because he is what the doctor used to be. the doctor created himself through that promise.

it follows that he is probably the unofficial 9th because of john hurt’s previous involvement and all that and there were some unofficial 9th’s but i’m not sure of that.

some more info:

possible theory: john hurt is an aged 8th doctor (aged paul mcgann, basically). we know the 8th doctor has probably the most adventures other media adventures, and we never see or know how he regenerates into 9. maybe this regeneration was allowed to grow old over time, and that old version of 8 was the man who ended the time war.

possible proof of this theory: when 11 and clara were stranded in the time winds at the end of “the name of the doctor” they kept seeing his past incarnations run past but they never saw 8 (they didn’t see 10 either, which helps me earlier theory that he will show up at the beginning of the 50th to meet them and save them and go on an adventure)
